SEO without the jargon

17 key terms explained in plain language – for business owners, not IT specialists.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization

Optimizing your website for search engines. In practice: everything that makes your site rank higher in Google when someone searches for the product or service you offer. Good SEO = more customers without paying for ads.

Keyword

search term

The word or phrase a potential customer types into Google. For example, "dentist in Boston" or "how to choose insurance" are keywords. Your website needs to include the right keywords so Google knows who to show it to.

Ranking position

SERP position

The spot where your website appears in the search results. Position #1 is the first organic result, #10 is the last one on page one. Studies show 75% of users never make it to page two.

SEO article

blog post

Content written with both search engines and readers in mind. It answers the questions your potential customers are asking, includes the right keywords, and is written in a way Google considers valuable. It's Trafficly's core SEO tool.

Meta description

SEO snippet

A short text (up to 160 characters) shown under your page title in Google's results. It doesn't directly affect ranking, but a good meta description encourages clicks – which indirectly boosts your visibility.

Crawling

page discovery

The process where Google's "bots" automatically visit websites and collect their content. It's the first step before a page can appear in search results. A new page may wait a few days for its first crawl.

Indexing

adding to Google's database

Adding a page to Google's database. A page has to be indexed to appear in search results at all. You can check whether your site is indexed by typing site:yourdomain.com into Google.

CTR

Click-Through Rate

The percentage of people who clicked your link after seeing it in Google's results. A CTR of 5% means 5 out of 100 people who saw your result clicked it. Higher CTR = more visits at the same ranking position.

Organic visibility

unpaid traffic

Traffic to your website from Google without paying for ads. Visits from Google Ads are paid traffic – organic is the "free" kind. SEO is all about building organic visibility that works 24/7 with no ongoing ad spend.

Long-tail keyword

long-tail phrase

A longer, more specific keyword phrase. For example, "best dentist for implants in downtown Boston" instead of just "dentist." It gets fewer searches, but someone typing a phrase like that is usually already decided – so it converts better.

Content marketing

content strategy

A business strategy built on creating valuable content – articles, guides, answers to questions – that attracts potential customers and builds trust in your brand. Unlike ads, content keeps working long after it's published.

Google Search Console

GSC

A free tool from Google for website owners. It shows which keywords drive traffic, how many clicks and impressions you get, where you rank, and whether Google has trouble indexing your site. Trafficly automatically integrates GSC data.

Core Web Vitals

page experience metrics

Google's standards for measuring how comfortable a page is to use: loading speed, layout stability, and responsiveness. Pages that meet these standards can be rewarded with higher rankings. Simply put: a slow site = a lower spot on Google.

Anchor text

link text

The clickable text of a link. For example, in the sentence "check out our SEO services in Boston" – "SEO services in Boston" is the anchor text. It helps Google understand what the linked page is about and strengthens its ranking for those keywords.

AI agent

autonomous AI assistant

A program built on a language model that completes a multi-step task on its own: it gathers data, makes a decision and acts inside your tools – for example, it qualifies a new lead and adds it to your CRM. Unlike a chatbot, it does not just answer questions – it does the work.

Workflow automation

process automation

Connecting the tools you already use – forms, CRM, email, invoicing, spreadsheets – into a single flow that runs by itself. Instead of copying data from one place to another by hand, the system does it every time something happens, such as a new order coming in.
